Asking and giving personal information
Objectives
Objective: In this lesson,
students will learn how to ask for personal information and respond
properly in different situations. Discussions and practices will be
about how to make questions appropriately and give answers based on the
social context.
LESSON
DEFINITION:
When you want to give questions about personal information, it is always in the Present Simple…so you have to follow the structure of the present simple tense.
Look at the following examples:
WH-questions in Present Simple Tense
What’s your name?
What’s her / his name
What’s their names
What’s your address
What’s her/ his address…etc.
• Explanation :
- ‘What‘s’ or ‘What is’ is followed by her, his, our, their. These are called possessive pronouns.
-Other Examples: Your bag, her bag, his watch, their watches, my bracelet, etc.
- Her name is Lily…
-Their names are David and Lily or people just commonly say:
-I’m David
-She is Lily…etc.
-What grade are you ?
- What city is she/he from?
- How old are you/they?
- How old is she?
- Where are you/they from?
• Explanation :
Please notice that we use ‘be’ form: are, is, am in these questions
Remember the rules…You -are…I -am…She / He- is…
With this ‘be’ form we often see them shortened or contraction when they go together with subjects. For example: She is – She’s, You are – You’re etc.
• How to answer :
I’m 17 years old.
She is 20 (years old).
I’m from Canada.
They are from Japan.
Hint : Do you see any action word/verb on the questions and answer above?
Let’s see other forms of question in the Present Simple in the following lesson.
-Where do you/they live?
-Where does she/he?
-Where do you come from?
-Where does she?
-What school do you go?
-What does he go?
• How to answer :
I live in South Jakarta.
They come from Japan.
She lives on Jalan Dharmawangsa no.x1.
He comes from Papua.
We have to be aware with some structural changes which are very common in English language. And as it has mentioned before, the Present Simple Tense is used. This is to show that the situation of asking and answering take place in current situation, at the present (now) time. So we have to follow the structure in grammar rules. Let’s see some examples below
-Where do you come from?
- Where do they live?
- What class do we attend?
Please notice that we use the auxiliary ‘do’ in the question forms this ‘do’ doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a helper of the verbs (come, live, attend). It is usually used in interrogative and negative forms.
Now let’s see examples of personal information answer :
- I come from India.
- They live in Kebayoran Baru.
- We attend the Art class.
When the subject is the 3rd person singular, pronouns are used such as: She, He, It. Names of people are also commonly used such as Sarah, Tom, David. Look at the examples below, and look carefully that different auxiliaries are used.
- Where does he come from?
- Where does Sarah live?
- What school does David go?
Let’s see the answer :
- He comes from Japan.
- Sarah lives in Depok.
- David goes to Jakarta International School.
In the Present Simple Tense the verbs for the 3rd person subject in the sentences are changed. Ending of ‘s’, ‘es’ and ‘ies’ will be inserted at the end of the verb. Read the following guide:
Most of the verb ends with consonant will be added with –s
For example: works, visits, learns, finds, brings shows…etc.
Verbs end with vowel will be added with - es
For example: goes, does, etc.
Verbs end with consonant –y will be added with -ies
For example: studies, cries, tries, etc.
But please notice exceptions for these words:
‘plays’ instead of ‘playies’; ‘buys’ instead of ‘buyies’
